REVIEW YOUR SNOHOMISH PROPERTY

Begin with the
Snohomish Property's Review Path

Begin by locating your Snohomish parcel's jurisdiction and review requirements. Then consider how a separate household will enter, live and spend time outside while the existing home's character remains part of the design conversation throughout.

01

Locate district boundaries before choosing a style

Check whether the parcel is in a district with design standards or review requirements. Resolve the roof, exterior materials and relationship to an existing house before treating a detached plan as ready to submit.

02

Use current rules rather than an old checklist

Snohomish amended its ADU chapter in 2026. Confirm current size, parking and service expectations with Planning and Development Services when testing a concept, rather than relying on an older downloaded handout.

03

Show how the entire property functions

Prepare a site concept with property lines, entrances, easements and utility routes. Compare the outdoor space left by a detached building with the circulation and privacy effects of an interior conversion.

THE SEATTLE DESIGN COLLECTION

Bring Seattle ADUniverse Ideas
to a Snohomish Review

The ADUniverse catalog is a Seattle resource containing 183 entries, of which 31 have plans. It offers layouts worth discussing for Snohomish. It does not establish approval for a local parcel; current city requirements, district standards where applicable and the proposed project's review still matter.

These 10 designs are listed as pre-approved in Seattle’s gallery. Site-specific permitting and a plan license from the designer are still required.

Snohomish ADU Planning, with
the Details in View

Clarify jurisdiction and current guidance first, then use the property assessment to answer the questions specific to your home.

Ask us your question
Does the Snohomish Historic District include homes as well as shops?

Yes. The city's history describes a district with both residential and commercial uses. Check the actual boundary and applicable design standards for the parcel; the age of a home alone does not establish whether a project follows that district's review process.

Can I rely on the ADU rules in an older Snohomish handout?

Confirm them before designing. The city adopted amendments to its ADU and detached-dwelling chapters in March 2026, after its older FAQ and checklist were issued. Ask staff for the current requirements applicable to your proposal, especially parking, dimensions and utilities.

Is a Snohomish address always reviewed by the City of Snohomish?

No. First verify whether the parcel is inside the incorporated city. A property with a Snohomish postal address may be in unincorporated Snohomish County, where the county's permitting and development rules apply instead of the city's.

How should an ADU addition relate to an older Snohomish home?

Study the existing roof lines, window proportions and entry sequence before drawing the addition. Give each household a useful arrival route and place new windows with privacy in mind. The goal is an independent living space that also leaves the original house coherent.

How is the construction price established for my Snohomish ADU?

Your Snohomish price is developed around the selected layout and property review. The written proposal should identify design responsibilities, site preparation, utility connections, finishes, allowances, exclusions, fees and taxes. The area planner on this page does not calculate a construction price.

What support comes with the finished Snohomish construction work?

A New Dwelling in a City That Preserves Its Past

Snohomish developed at the meeting of the Pilchuck and Snohomish rivers, on land with a much longer Sdohobsh history. The settlement known as Cadyville became Snohomish, and nineteenth-century plats established the streets that supported its farming and logging economy. The city incorporated in 1890. Preservation became a deliberate part of its future when a Historic District was established in 1973, encompassing residential as well as commercial buildings. For an ADU, that history makes placement and exterior design meaningful questions. A new dwelling should respond to its specific street and property while offering a practical home for today's household needs.

Another Home Within Snohomish's Continuing Story

Create a second home that respects your Snohomish property's character and supports everyday living. Begin with jurisdiction, design-review status and site conditions, then compare ways to add independent space without losing the qualities that make the existing home work. Weigh the existing structure, the property's character and how each arrangement supports separate living.

River settlement, historic streets and preservation help frame a considered approach to contemporary independent living.

Confirm the actual jurisdiction and current development requirements for the Snohomish property. A mailing address alone does not establish the permit authority.
